Welcome to the International Valley Health Institute (IVHI) web site.
The IVHI is dedicated to preventing assaults to the health of the Lower Rio Grande Valley population by applying evidence-based knowledge. This is developed by drawing upon academic and community expertise, combining these resources synergistically, and then working through the participatory community research model to customize solutions developed in other regions, or to develop new, regionally specific solutions to public health issues. The IVHI combines these problem solving research activities with education; creative activity; and public service in building true community capacity to deal with regional public health problems. Current projects emphasize school parks as well as pedestrian and bicycle trails to increase recreation opportunities and community health.
A point of emphasis is the responsibility that the IVHI assumes to operate the programs that have been generated through its collaborative research efforts should no other agency be able to accept the responsibility.
The IVHI was incorporated in April of 2006 as an independent, federally recognized tax-exempt (501©3 non-profit) organization. It is one in a network of local public health institutes nationwide with the goal of improving the American population’s well being by supporting and encouraging the mitigation of risky behaviors and improving and promoting good health through education and prevention activities.
